Changing Your Background in Windows XP

Tired of looking at the Windows logo every time you turn on your computer? You’ll be happy to know that you can change your background with a few simple clicks.

1. Right-click the mouse with the cursor anywhere on your desktop. (Make sure not to click on any icons. Click on empty desktop space.)

2. A menu will appear. Click on PROPERTIES down at the bottom.

3. Once in the Properties menu, you will see some tabs at the top of the box. Click on DESKTOP.

4. You are now looking at the Desktop menu. Under the word BACKGROUND you will see a list of different choices to use as a background in Windows. To the right you will see a BROWSE... button. If you would like to use a custom background click on the BROWSE... button. Otherwise select any of the backgrounds from the list and go to step 7. For a custom background, follow the next steps.

5. Once you click on the BROWSE... button, you will see a window open up that contains pictures in it. Typically this is the MY PICTURES folder. Select any picture from this folder and then click OPEN in the bottom right corner. In this case we will use the picture of a shark called "NurseShark".

6. You will now notice that "NurseShark" is now part of the list of pictures to choose. Click on it to select it.

7. Once you have done this, notice on the right where it says POSITION. Here you may select if the picture is centered, tiles or stretched to fit the screen. Choose which way you would like the picture to display and then click OK.
