Guide to Keyboard Shortcuts

Have you ever noticed how some computer users seem to be able to do things twice as fast as you can? Ever noticed how many times they avoid the mouse and seem to be "mashing" keys? Ever wonder what the secret is? It's simple - there are a multitude of keyboard "shortcuts" that you can utilize. Below is a list of some of the more common ones:

  • Copy | shortcut: Control + C - What this does is copy the highlighted information. If you later "paste" it somewhere, the original information will still be in place.

  • Cut | shortcut: Control + X - What this does is remove the highlighted information. You may still paste it later, but when you do the original information will be moved to the new pasted location.

  • Paste | shortcut: Control + V - This places the previously copied or cut information into the new location.

  • Bold | shortcut: Control + B - This bolds the highlighted text or selects the bold feature for text you are about to write.

  • Italics | shortcut: Control + I - This italicizes the highlighted text or selects the italics feature for text you are about to write.

  • Underline | shortcut: Control + U - This underlines the highlighted text or selects the underline feature for text you are about to write.

  • Save | shortcut: Control + S - This is a quick way to save whatever you are working on.

  • Switching between open windows | shortcut: Alt + Tab - This allows you to switch between open windows instead of needing to click on the window at the bottom of your screen.

  • Moving the cursor over | shortcut: Tab - You could press the space bar repeatedly, but if you want to indent text using specific alignments it is better to "tab" the text over. This will ensure that the items remain in nice columns.

  • Moving to the end of a line | shortcut: End - This comes in handy when typing either an email or Word document if you need to quickly move to the end of the line.

  • Moving to the beginning of a line | shortcut: Home - Conversely, this comes in handy when typing either an email or Word document if you need to quickly move to the beginning of the line.

  • Highlighting an entire line | shortcut: Shift + End - This would highlight the entire line. There are two ways you can do this. Move to either the beginning or the end of the line by using either the Home or End shortcut. If you use Home and are now at the beginning of the line, use Shift + End as the keyboard shortcut. If you use End and are now at the beginning of the line, use Shift + Home as the keyboard shortcut.

These are some of the simple keyboard shortcuts that are used every day. Some of them may take awhile to get used to. In some cases, if you look closely at your keyboard you will notice a shape such as a diamond on the Control key and then the same diamond with the specific shortcut function under the C, X, V, B, U, I and S keys. Try them out and see how much time you end up saving while working on your computer.
