Utilize the taskbar in Windows 7

With more and more PC users making the leap to Windows 7, many people are discovering some of the exciting features of Microsoft's new operating system. One of Windows 7's nicer features allows users to “pin” shortcuts to the taskbar to allow faster access to frequently used programs. Follow the guide below to learn how to pin your programs to the taskbar:

1. The taskbar is the bar across the bottom of your screen that shows what programs are open. The taskbar also displays the clock in the right-hand corner of the screen and may include shortcuts to various functions.

2. In Windows 7, the Start button from Windows XP has been replaced by a circle with the Windows' flag in it. This will be familiar to Windows Vista users.

3. Beside the Start button are shortcuts to open programs.

4. In order to "pin" a program to the taskbar, we must open the program. To do this, click on the Start button.

5. For this example we will open the calculator. To do this, click on calculator from your menu.

6. Once the calculator is open, you will see the icon for it appear on the taskbar.

7. If you scroll over the calculator icon, a window will pop up to show you a miniature version of the open calculator.

8. If you right-click on the calculator, a menu will pop up above the icon.

9. The top of this menu indicates which program is open.

10. The second choice is to "pin" the program to the taskbar.

11. And the third option or bottom is to close the program.

12. To pin the program, click on the “Pin this program to taskbar” option.

13. Now we will close the program.

14. You will notice that even with the program closed the calculator shortcut appears on the taskbar beside the other shortcuts.
